Kurikulum Merdeka (Indonesia Merdeka Curriculum)

Summary

Kurikulum Merdeka ("Independent Curriculum") is Indonesia's national curriculum for early-childhood, primary, and secondary education, launched in February 2022 by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) as part of the Merdeka Belajar ("Freedom to Learn") reforms and made mandatory for all schools by Ministerial Regulation Permendikbudristek No. 12 of 2024. The curriculum grants schools and teachers wide flexibility: students and teachers choose learning materials and methods, with the goal of deeper conceptual mastery rather than content coverage. Its three stated principles are character development (spiritual, moral, social, and emotional competencies, integrated into learning), flexibility (adaptable to student needs, school characteristics, and local sociocultural context), and focus on essential content. Its learning characteristics include assessment at the start, during, and at the end of learning; adjustment to student needs; and prioritizing learning progress over curriculum completion. Co-curricular activity centers on the Projek Penguatan Profil Pelajar Pancasila (P5) — project-based strengthening of the Pancasila Student Profile — covering themes such as sustainability ("Gaya Hidup Berkelanjutan"), local wisdom, and entrepreneurship. Implementation is supported by the Platform Merdeka Mengajar (PMM), free textbooks via buku.kemdikbud.go.id, and the official portal kurikulum.kemdikbud.go.id.

Guiding Principles

Youth Empowerment: Student agency is structural — learners choose materials and carry out self-directed projects under the Pancasila Student Profile.

Transferable Skills: The essential-content focus and P5 projects target character, collaboration, and problem-solving competencies over rote coverage.

The framework cultivates Project Management through mandatory P5 project work, Systems Thinking via cross-curricular themes (sustainable lifestyle projects can host school hydroponics/aquaponics), Sustainability Literacy through the P5 sustainability theme, and Community Organizing through locally rooted projects. For this vault, Kurikulum Merdeka is the policy hook that lets Indonesian schools embed aquaponics/hydroponics builds as P5 projects with full curricular legitimacy.
