Transferable Skills

Definition

Transferable skills are competencies acquired in one setting that remain valuable across others — from school to work, one industry to another, or one life role to the next. The concept sits at the center of modern qualification and learning frameworks such as the European Qualifications Framework, the OECD Learning Compass 2030, and employability agendas in vocational education. Typical examples include systems thinking, data literacy, project management, CAD and fabrication, troubleshooting, and collaborative problem-solving.

Why It Matters Here

A student who balances a nutrient solution, debugs a dosing pump, or tolerances a printed fitting is rehearsing the same reasoning used in laboratories, farms, factories, and workshops. This is why aquaponics/hydroponics/3D-printing programs punch above their weight educationally: the food is almost a byproduct — the durable output is competence. Qualification frameworks like the EQF and national plans make this explicit, and most entries in this vault name transferable skills as an outcome, making it the principle with the broadest reach across the collection.
