Definition

The circular economy is a systems framework that replaces the linear 'take-make-dispose' model with closed loops in which outputs and 'wastes' become inputs for other processes. Its intellectual roots include industrial ecology, cradle-to-cradle design (McDonough & Braungart, 2002), and biomimicry, and it was popularized institutionally by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. Core moves include designing out waste, keeping materials in use at their highest value, and regenerating natural systems rather than merely extracting from them.
