Definition
Community self-sufficiency is the capacity of a local group — a village, school, neighborhood, or island — to meet its essential needs (food, tools, training, repair) through its own skills, materials, and institutions rather than continuous outside supply. Its lineage runs through appropriate-technology movements (E.F. Schumacher's 'Small Is Beautiful', 1973), transition-town and resilience thinking, and community-development practice that treats local capability as the asset to build. It does not mean isolation; it means choosing interdependence from a position of local strength.
