Definition
Food sovereignty is the right of peoples, communities, and nations to define their own food and agriculture systems — what they grow, how they grow it, and who controls the seeds, land, water, and knowledge involved. The concept was articulated by La Via Campesina at the 1996 World Food Summit and formalized in the 2007 Nyeleni Declaration, deliberately going beyond 'food security' (having enough food) to questions of power, culture, and self-determination in food systems. It emphasizes local control, agroecological methods, and the rights of small-scale producers over corporate and import dependence.
Why It Matters Here
Aquaponics and hydroponics put food production directly into the hands of schools, households, and neighborhoods that otherwise depend on distant supply chains — a literal reclaiming of the means of production at community scale.
