Open Source

Definition

Open source is the practice of licensing designs, code, documentation, or content so that anyone may inspect, use, modify, and redistribute them. It grew from the free-software movement (GNU, 1983; the OSI definition, 1998) and spread outward to open hardware (OSHWA definition, CERN OHL), open educational resources (CC licenses, UNESCO's OER recommendation), and open data. Its core claim is that shared, inspectable artifacts improve faster, cost less, and distribute capability more widely than closed ones.

Why It Matters Here

Open source is the load-bearing wall of this vault: it is why a school in Pretoria, a household in Guam, and a classroom in Chengdu can all build from the same net-cup STL, the same Arduino firmware, and the same free curriculum without paying license fees or asking permission. It converts scarce expertise into infinitely copyable files, enables local adaptation and translation, and — critically for education — lets students read and modify real production-grade systems rather than black boxes, turning consumers of technology into contributors to it.
