Definition
STEM integration is a pedagogy that teaches science, technology, engineering, and mathematics not as separate subjects but as an interconnected practice applied to real problems โ often extended to STEAM with the arts. Its lineage includes the US National Science Foundation's STEM agenda of the 1990sโ2000s, NGSS-style phenomenon-based science standards, and project-based learning traditions going back to Dewey. The defining feature is that disciplinary knowledge is mobilized together in service of designing, building, and explaining something real.
Why It Matters Here
An aquaponics or hydroponics system is a nearly perfect STEM integrator: water chemistry and fish biology (S), sensors and microcontrollers (T), plumbing and structural design (E), and dosing calculations, pH curves, and growth-rate data (M) all in one living artifact.
